Outdoor Enclosure & Cooling Solution for Smart Substations

This smart substation application combines a floor-standing outdoor enclosure with integrated climate control, bottom cable entry and internal 19-inch equipment mounting. Three side-mounted cooling configurations were considered to balance equipment protection, installation space and maintenance access.
Application: Smart Substation / Outdoor Electrical Infrastructure
Key Requirements
Solution Configuration
The outdoor cabinet needed to house communication and electrical equipment while integrating thermal management into the enclosure structure. The design also had to accommodate 19-inch equipment, bottom cable entry, rain protection and convenient access to the cooling equipment for inspection and maintenance.
A key design consideration was how to install the climate control equipment without unnecessarily increasing cabinet size or making routine maintenance difficult.
The solution uses a floor-standing outdoor enclosure manufactured from stainless steel or aluminum-magnesium alloy, with climate control integrated into the side of the cabinet.
Main enclosure frame: 800 W × 1600 H × 600 D mm
Complete double-layer configuration: 1050 W × 1750 H × 600 D mm
The configuration incorporates:
Internal accessory quantities and configurations can be adjusted according to the equipment being installed.

The climate control equipment is installed in a dedicated side compartment with a door. This provides additional physical protection during operation while allowing the compartment to be opened for cooling unit inspection and maintenance.

This configuration replaces the dedicated access door with a bent sheet-metal cover fixed to the side panel with screws. The extended rain canopy provides additional coverage for the climate control equipment.
For maintenance, the fixing screws can be released and the protective cover removed to access the cooling equipment.

The climate control equipment can also be mounted externally without a dedicated cooling compartment. This reduces the overall cabinet width and simplifies the enclosure structure.
Because the climate control equipment is more directly exposed to the outdoor environment, the environmental suitability of the selected cooling equipment requires additional consideration.
| Configuration | Application Reference | Main Advantage | Consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side-mounted compartment | 1000 W / 80 W/K | Additional protection and convenient maintenance access | Requires additional enclosure width |
| Economical compartment | 1000 W / 80 W/K | Simpler protective structure | Protective cover must be removed for maintenance |
| External side mounting | 1000 W / 80 W/K | Reduces overall enclosure width | Requires climate control equipment suitable for outdoor exposure |
The enclosure integrates the climate control equipment with the outdoor cabinet while maintaining access to the internal electrical and communication equipment.
The internal configuration can incorporate two pairs of 19-inch mounting angles and depth supports, with accessory quantities adjusted according to the installed equipment. Cable entry is provided from the bottom of the enclosure, while front and rear single doors provide equipment access.

The appropriate configuration depends on available installation space, required protection for the climate control equipment, maintenance requirements and environmental conditions.
Important: The 1000 W cooling unit and 80 W/K heat exchanger shown in this case are application references. Final cooling capacity should be verified against the actual enclosure heat load, ambient conditions, installed equipment and installation environment.
