Rittal AX Stainless Steel Enclosures
The Rittal AX stainless steel enclosure is a compact wall-mounted enclosure for electrical and control equipment. Rittal offers the AX stainless steel series in AISI 304 (1.4301) and AISI 316L (1.4404). AISI 304 is suitable for general industrial environments, while AISI 316L provides higher corrosion resistance for more demanding applications.
Multiple AX stainless steel models are available with different dimensions, door configurations, locking systems and protection ratings, with selected models rated up to IP66 and NEMA 4X.

Consider AX stainless steel where condensation, splash, process moisture or frequent surface cleaning makes a painted enclosure less desirable.
Use stainless steel where salts, aggressive vapours or chemical residues may reach the enclosure. Prefer 316L when chloride or chemical exposure requires higher corrosion resistance.
Confirm rain, solar load, UV exposure, temperature range, condensation control and any canopy or climate-control requirement. Stainless steel alone does not complete an outdoor specification.
Check water pressure, temperature, direction, cleaning frequency and chemical compatibility. Every gland, cut-out and accessory must preserve the required enclosure protection.
Standard AX stainless steel may suit non-product or secondary zones, but it is not automatically a Hygienic Design enclosure. For hygiene-critical or open-product zones, assess Rittal Hygienic Design construction and the applicable sanitation standard.
If there is no credible corrosion, hygiene or washdown risk, Carbon Steel AX may provide the required wall-mounted platform and protection rating at lower material cost.

Before choosing an AX stainless steel enclosure, check more than the external W × H × D dimensions. The usable mounting area, internal component depth, cable routing space and accessory installation requirements can all affect whether a model is suitable for the application.

Compare the mounting plate dimensions with the actual space required for PLCs, power supplies, terminals, contactors, drives and wiring ducts. Allow additional clearance for installation, maintenance and future expansion.
Allow for component and wiring depth.
Do not compare the nominal enclosure depth directly with component depth. Leave sufficient space for terminals, cable bends, connectors, DIN rails and any equipment mounted on the inside of the door.
Confirm cable entry requirements.
Consider the number, size and entry direction of incoming cables before selecting the enclosure. Cable glands, sealing inserts and cable-entry accessories may require additional installation space.
